Description of the Community

The school is located in an older more established part of the Mount/Papamoa area 4 km from the downtown Mount shopping centre. ‘In-fill’ building has been a feature of the area in recent years and families with children continue to move into the area or transport their children to the school from further afield. Generally there is a stable population base but there is evidence of an increasing transient factor in the school population. Most are in employment. The School Community is predominantly of NZ-European descent with approximately 19% identifying as Maori. There is a full range of established community facilities. Many of the 5 yr. old new entrants have attended the adjacent Gwen Rogers Kindergarten but an increasing number attend a range of other early childhood/pre-school institutions. A majority of the Yr 6 children move on to Mt. Intermediate and then to Mt. College which is adjacent to the school. Most parents play an active supportive role with the School Support Group providing leadership for a range of school-community based initiatives. Parents have high expectations of the school and the role it plays in the education of their children.
